My qualifications as a Nuclear Medicine Specialist as well as a Medical Physician enable me to combine a highly specialized field of Medical Diagnosis and Treatment with routine Medical Practice.
As an International Maritime Health Consultant and a Nuclear Medicine Consultant, I am authorized by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to import and use Radio Isotopes in Medicine. An off shoot of this highly specialized branch is the use of Radio isotopes in Investigations: these include the estimations of Drugs of Abuse, (so mandatory in Pre sign on Medical Examinations), the estimations
of Hormones in Thyroid function, Infertility and Reproduction, Tumour markers, the monitoring of Therapeutic Drugs etc., to name a few.
My role as Chief Consultant and Medical Physician to the various Shipping Companies involves the carrying out of the Pre sign on Medical Fitness prior to joining various flag ships in India and abroad.
Besides this, my responsibilities also extend to handling Repatriations following Accidents and Acute illnesses etc. In this I am ably assisted by a well trained team of Medical and Para medical personnel. For this, I need to liaise and maintain excellent relations with
the best Medical and Surgical Super specialists, Cardiologists, Medical Directors, Hospital Administrators, Nursing staff, Nursing homes and all supportive and complementary medical personnel.
The nature of my work is diverse, varied and never lacks excitement. It keeps me well informed, alert and active, and professionally ahead of my peers and times. Much of what I am today I owe to my upbringing. My father retired from the Indian Navy as Director General – Coast Guard Health Services in the rank of Surgeon Commander. He fostered in me values of integrity, hard work and discipline. Along with this came a
love for the sea and all things Marine. At Nair Hospital, I was involved in a pilot study of Avascular Necrosis – Head of Femur in Deep sea divers.
I am also a very keen sailor, and have been sailing since I was twelve and in the various classes of boats, viz., optimist, cadet,
enterprise and seabird. I have also participated in several National Sailing Championships for which I have won some prizes.
By virtue of all this, my medical expertise and my pure love for the sea, I am appointed as the Honorary Medical Adviser to the Yachting Association of India. Our services are in the nature of Medical Cover, Search and Rescue, Supply etc. In an emergency situation, we have also handled an acute medical emergency out at sea.
In the field of Medical Education, my wife and I attend conferences, medical updates and also deliver lectures on current topics such
as HIV and AIDS, and on work related topics such as Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, Safety and Health in Dock workers, Accident
Prevention on Ships, Labour Conditions out at sea, Maritime Labour Conventions and Recommendations by ILO, etc.
For the future, I intend to continue in the service of the Merchant Marine, the Sailing Marine and the field of Medical education especially with regard to medical information and education of sea farers and other sea related activities. It is also my endeavour to pursue Occupation / Industrial Medicine and be of service in implementing Preventive Medicine in relation to Occupation. I aim to liaise closely with World bodies like the IMHA, ILO, WHO, IMO, ITF and help in implementation and standardization of
guidelines laid down for uniformity in the Maritime Health Industry worldwide. |
